As I was putting away groceries today I analyzed a little bit.
My way of buying food has changed through the years.
I've been cooking from scratch, buying in bulk, and grinding up my wheat for the most part since 2007 when we moved back to Provo, UT.
Now I find myself buying more (lots more) organic/non-GMO (genetically modified organism) prepackaged snacks. Thanks to Solomon asking for a "NAK!" every five minutes no matter when he just ate last. I buy lots of organic fruits and vegetables too, but sometimes tossing him an organic pop tart is just easier.
I also cut back HUGE on our meat consumption back in Utah as well. I have said I would eat more meat if I had the cow in my backyard but these big factory meat farms are not my thing. I grew up with hunted game to eat. I also have a hard time eating seafood when we're no where near an ocean but that's a whole other can of worms. I buy meat from my brother in law who hunts, but then I think how people bait the deer with corn, corn I'm sure is GMO corn and I feel like the cycle continues. A cycle I want to get away from but can't exactly go off the grid right now, and I think do I really WANT to go off the grid?
Lately I've been buying organic MILK for crying out loud. I feel so strange sometimes doing it. I started thinking though if I am buying less meat and organic meat when I can because of the hormones and all that in the animals then obviously the milk and other dairy products are an issue.
I feel like I'm so wishy washy with all this sometimes, let me explain.
I LOVE TO EAT OUT and am not one of those who will not eat fast food.
I guess at the end of the day I'm balancing out everything.
I don't feel bad for getting my kids a happy meal from McDonald's when they're $1.99 if they're eating healthier at home.
I get so frustrated by our food in America. Food in other countries made by these same companies are different and it kills me. French Fries from McDonald's in America have like 20 ingredients but in England they have like 3 (potatoes, salt, oil). Why in America do we allow this? When in Chile I got so frustrated because it felt like America was taking over their grocery store shelves.
I just don't think it should be so hard to eat REAL food.
I don't think you should have to buy ORGANIC just so your child isn't eating GMOs and all that jazz.
This is yet another reason why sometimes I just want to move overseas (besides my obvious love for adventure).
I guess at the end of the day it's all about moderation but moderation is hard when everything is full of GMO corn.
To me it's just a lame situation that I find myself so frustrated by.
I find myself thinking about Jake's Aunt who died young of cancer, yet she never had sugar in her home, brought food on road trips so to not eat out, you name it she did it. It just makes me feel even more lost.
So I'm the Mom who buys a lot of organic foods but will happily get some taco bell too, maybe that makes me a food hypocrite, but that's me.
Me who's in love with my homemade bath products from my friend.
Me that sleeps in her make-up and doesn't always remember to put sunscreen on her kids.
Me that could put "cheese sauce" on everything, but just spent $6.18 for a gallon of organic milk.
Then I sit and wonder if at the end of the day I'm even making a difference in all this food mess.
For them, I hope I am.

Good post. We all worry like this! I asked some friends if they would be wiling to interview with Mark for his dissertation research and no one wanted to commit, I mean NO ONE. Because they all said "I'm not really doing enough," or "I wouldn't call my efforts sustainable..." We have such a hard time committing because it's SO HARD, and God forbid we label ourselves as trying; then every time we do something outside the expectation, we think PEOPLE ARE NOTICING. Anyway, I understand. Totally. Love you!
