ROTC 4th year cadets and cadre BBQ at LTC Leblow's house.
It was strange for me to think of Jake being referred to as "cadre."
(The word cadre originally referred to ‘the permanent skeleton of a military unit, the commissioned and non-commissioned officers, etc., around whom the rank and file may be quickly grouped’ (Chambers Dictionary).
At the party I quickly realized I'm not the mom who monitors what my kids eat at these functions, I am sampling it all, why can't they?
One mom across the table told her daughter after she ate her tortellini she could choose one dessert. I told her she was awesome (as Mali Su brought me her 2nd cupcake to take the wrapper off of).
Later a guy Jake works with was giving Mali Su an oreo and I said "ohhh" and followed it by "you are lucky he is giving you an Oreo" and the man (Sunny) said he thought I was going to get onto him for giving her an Oreo. I told him I could care less if my kids ate 7 cupcakes at something like this.
It's a BBQ, have fun, eat food, throw the Frisbee...as long as they don't puke I'm fine.
They (the Leblows) have a great backyard for the kids to play in. This castle was there last year and the kids loved it just as much this year.
Malachi played with James (Ricks) most of the time.
Well I guess play isn't the word. They beat each other up. Malachi would do his open handed pound move and James would always do the pinch/scratch/grab move that would make Malachi cry. We at one point moved Malachi far away and James was on the prowl and crawled to Malachi, Malachi immediately pounded him as if to say "I remember you, go away!"
Aimi Lark found these "noculars" (binoculars without the "bi"). She thought they were the coolest toy ever. I always like seeing what toys my kids are drawn to when they play with the toys of others.
After the food portion they had a little Q&A with the spouses so that they can know more of what to expect joining the military. I think joining the military you need an experienced buddy to help you learn the ropes at first. Soldiers have "battle buddies" maybe wives could use "wife buddies" or something. Getting the hang of Tricare alone can bring you to tears.
My tip is to learn the acronyms (the military loves acronyms) and everything will be a lot easier.
I really do love and enjoy military life.
Oh and Jake sharpened about 800 pencils manually today...it was his idea for recruiting...they dropped them off at the testing center and they were all gone but 6 I hear.

Jake's idea about the pencils the best recruiting idea. Ever. Ask him how many electric sharpeners they burned out! He'll be handy with school projects, I bet.
ReplyDeleteI'm so with you on the 'lax mom' at functions. It isn't a learning opportunity, it is a relaxing opportunity, and if I'm stressed about what they're trying to eat, I'm not having any more fun than they are. Just eat what you want and leave me to chat in peace.
ReplyDeleteDid you cut Malachi's hair? He looks so handsome and grown up in the picture.
ReplyDeleteAwesome post. And yeah I am a lax mom about a lot of things. Glad you guys had fun!
