Growing up we seemed to have an outside dog, that was it. I was never a fan of animals of in the house. When we got Zelda two years ago as a stray I never knew I'd come to "love" her like I do. She's a great dog. I started to question lately what the point of having a "guard" dog is if she is so jolly.
So here's how Zelda works I've discovered. INTIMIDATION. You see a strong pit bull barking like a maniac at you through the glass by the door, you're more likely to go away. Even though, when I open the door she goes crazy silly begging for the person to pet her, no longer in "attack" mode. So if there is ever someone at the door, I just won't answer and let her scare them off.
Recently the mailman and UPS guys have stood at least 10 feet down the sidewalk away from our door when I open it and they ask where my dog is. I always put her in the "man cave" by the front door before I open it so she doesn't beg them to death to be petted. To them they just saw this ferocious dog at the door. They always ask, "Is your dog put away?" "are you sure?" "Can you just come out here to sign this?" It makes me laugh and makes me realize even though I'm pretty sure she'd never actually eat anyone she at least scares them off.
Now other animals, she doesn't do so well with. It's the most annoying thing. It's our fault since we've kept her to ourselves like an only child. I had no idea we should have been making her "make friends" with other dogs. Now, she's a pain and barks and wants to eat them on walks.
I really love her (her never having accidents has bonded us tremendously) and I'm really grateful for her "protecting" me when the Army has Jake or Law School has Jake or Work has Jake or Church has Jake (he wears a lot of hats).
Zelda we think you're awesome.
You are a great dog.
I plan on you being our only dog so thanks for the fun!
By the way, it's hard to take pictures of a DOG.
