(above is a picture I took while waiting for Jake at BAMC, Brooke Army Medical Center)
I always thought I understood what being patriotic meant, I mean, I am after all the wife of an American Soldier.
Sure, Jake's never been deployed, but I still felt like I got it, like I could relate and sympathize.
I was wrong.
Being here has opened my eyes to an entire world I was basically oblivious to. The whole country is oblivious to. If not oblivious, it's not on the forefront of their minds.
We are at war.
A war that is sending home so many wounded. Wounded not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well.
I guess I just wish the entire country could experience what I'm experiencing here, a true eye-opening experience. I'm seeing burn victims and amputees daily, some that are so so young is mind boggling.
I am so proud to be an American, proud of those who serve, and hope that we can all not forget that we are still in a war. Whether we agree with the war or not we're there, our country's men and women are over there.
Let's all take some time to remember the troops, wounded warriors, and those who are no longer with us.
If you see a Veteran of any war, tell them "Thank you for your service" I'm sure it'll make them smile.
I don't know if I even got across what I wanted to, but for me, being here at Fort Sam has brought the war just a little closer to home and made me even more aware and less naive and for that I'm grateful.

What a neat experience to get to visit wounded soldiers. I can imagine that would be a life changing one. It's so hard to let our husbands go over there knowing that if they returned they could returned hurt.
ReplyDeletewhat an experience. Davis recently was on a security detail for a soldier through the Wounded Warrior Project - a triple amputee, and it was a pretty amazing experience for him too.
