This probably isn't going to sound very good but I LOVE making kids play outside. I think it stems from our overly technological society. It probably didn't help that my sister Delaney told me, "I don't run, at my Daddy's I just watch TV."
While they were playing I took note of a few things.
Joby likes to be 1st, he runs ahead, pushes people aside, all to be first, he will yell, "1ST" when he gets somewhere first. He is obsessed with pointing out DIESELS (18 wheelers/semis), TANKS, BOATS, etc. on the road. He even used the word "low-boy" (AKA small flat trailer) when playing with a friend's barbie stuff.
Mali Su marches to the beat of her own imaginary drum. Delaney likes to keep the imaginative play organized her way, Mali Su doesn't comply. They're building a pretend stick fire, Mali Su hits it with sticks, Delaney scolds saying she'll ruin the fire.
Joby calls Delaney, "Sissy." It's a term of endearment, not an insult.
Delaney likes to dance and sing and put on little shows when no one is watching, makes me think she's a character on the Disney channel.
Malachi collects rocks, he found a big one and two little ones, the smallest he is calling "my baby."
Aimi Lark squeals when people don't listen to her. I'm trying to get her to use her words instead, it's getting better.
Delaney repeatedly tells someone to stop doing something until an adult overhears and intercedes, she doesn't tattle but instead gets onto the child herself enough til the adult steps in.
Malachi throws things, jumps on people, and is just all around rough. He can dish out but totally can't take it. Not the best combo.
Mali Su LOVES to dig in the dirt with her hands.
Solomon preferred chillin' on the bed in the A/C, but his forced outside playtime will come.
Kids should play outside, kids should expend lots of energy, and kids should get dirty.
That's all I've got to say about that.
I agree. We have to kick William out. The girls I can't keep in; they're dirt diggers. When W is outside though, he doesn't play well with others. He's got to be first, dictate the rules of the game, and gets rough. I get really frustrated with him, frustrated that I actually have to time him with electronics, that I have to make him pick up a book, and that I spend his time outside tensely monitoring how he's behaving. I don't like to let him stray from sight and he's the one old enough to go a little farther! *sigh
ReplyDeleteAmen!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree - my kids are wimps though ;-) and just want to play inside and then I have to make them go out. BUT, I will say that they are inside playing and not watching tv.
ReplyDeleteVery good to make them play outside! It helps in so many ways- that's a good thing! And, good that they learn how to play together- bravo m'am!
