We checked into our spectacular room at the bed and breakfast on the bay. I couldn't get over how perfect the room was.
We then started our walk through the "Oldest City in America" on our way to the fort. This monument was really awesome because it showed a timeline of the city.
We got to the fort and we were in awe! I have wanted to see this fort since I learned about it in school, in Jr. High. Jake was intrigued by the unusual building material used to build the fort.
Seeing the many layers of defense was amazing to me. They would put their animals in the moat during a battle to protect their animals. In the center of the fort was a large courtyard with a HUGE well that they were able to dig down and find an Artisan spring! This fort had EVERYTHING they needed.
Small doorways and tall arched ceilings were found throughout the living quarters. We even saw the jail area in this part of the fort that was quite creepy.
We were excited to learn about the shell stone that was used to build the fort. It is only found here and on the coast of Africa we were told. This structure reminded me of the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They both took around 30 years to build, they were built from materials/stone unique to the area, and have stood the test of time impressively.
As we went through we crawled through a small doorway/tunnel to enter this room where Jake could touch the ceiling. A stark contrast was a little bit later on the roof where we could see down forever.
They used a mortar made by burning oyster shells. All along the coast you can see OYSTERS everywhere. We even learned that they held USO shows in the courtyard of the fort. They used the fort all through WWII.
They had cannons all around the top of the structure.
These bastons were on each corner of the fort. We learned how the fort changed hands from the Spanish, French, and English.
This getaway is a dream come true for me.
1. I wanted to see this fort since Jr. High School when I saw a picture of it in a text book.
2. I have wanted to stay in a bed and breakfast since we were first married, 7 years ago.
3. I love historical places, the beach, and overnight stays alone with my husband.
